Collecting beautiful things

Why do we enjoy collecting? Collecting beautiful things. We enjoy holding them, looking at them and most importantly – claiming that they’re ours. That sweet illusion, I wonder, that we possess something is it a brain game or a society one. But one thing I know for sure, it does play tricks on our minds sometimes. And to escape for a few hours from collecting, I decided to create something beautiful if that’s possible.

For my further inspirations I can’t talk much, but classical music, butterflies and rain can unlock a lot of reflections. Why do people collect butterflies?

I do enjoy art practice, repeating one and the same thing over and over, just mixing different colours, distorting some proportions or waiting for the sun to almost vanish, to see these colours in a different light. And all this stream of consciousness started from one art practice. One day I just decided that I want to improve my butterfly drawings. And not only one thought, the universe was speaking to me with her many weird signs. I drew one butterfly, thought I could do better, then saw a Jess Karp Instagram story- drawing amazing butterflies, then I decided to devote a whole sketchbook page to butterflies… And I have to tell you this was an amazing decision. At the beginning I copied references, chose my colours carefully but after the fourth I thought – what if?

I started to improvise, to include patterns, colours and lines that I haven’t seen before on a reference. It was not a relief, it was a feast for my eyes and my soul. I was so scared that my intentions in art had been lost by copying reality for so long but at this exact moment after the fourth butterfly, I just felt myself.

The sound of the rain haunted my night and the butterflies- my dreams. I woke up then and started to paint. Again.
